Teaching Assistant in World History

Overview

Foundations Development Program is seeking a professional Teaching Assistant for mandatory freshmen course Humanity and Society (SPS 101-102).

Humanity and Society is a two semester specially designed interdisciplinary world history course given as part of our Foundations Development Program in which active learning techniques and new online teaching technologies are used. 

Appointment and the range of responsibilities will depend on qualifications and intent with the possibility of a renewable contract. 

Qualifications 

A minimum of MA degree in Social Sciences is required, preferably in Political Science, International Relations, History, Sociology, and other related fields. MA students who are in the process of writing their theses are also eligible for application. 

Qualified candidates’ cumulative grade point averages will be taken into consideration to evaluate their performance. Candidates with F (fail) grades in their transcript and/or candidates whose cumulative GPA is less than 3.50 (out of 4.00) will not be considered eligible. 

Qualified candidates’ language scores will be taken into consideration and candidates with the highest scores will be prioritized. 

Qualified candidates’ teaching experience will be taken into consideration. For candidates who have worked as an SPS teaching assistant before, their previous performance evaluations by SPS instructors and their student evaluation results will be taken into consideration. 

Qualified candidates’ compatibility with the respective needs of the SPS courses will be taken into consideration. Here candidates’ past SPS experience (if applicable), coordination and good team work skills, and their potential to contribute to the designed format of the course will be evaluated.

Responsibilities 

The candidate is expected to:

  • Attend the weekly SPS lectures and follow the course content 
  • Facilitate two discussion sections per week 
  • Grade examinations, writing assignments, and discussion section worksheets 
  • Provide replacement teaching where necessary 
  • Help with exam proctoring during midterm and make-up examinations 
  • Attend all training, orientation programs, and meetings designed for SPS teaching assistants
