Teaching Assistant in Art History

The Foundations Development Program at Sabancı University is seeking a qualified teaching assistant for an introductory level humanities course in Art History.

Overview 

The Foundations Development Directorate (FDD) is seeking a professional Teaching Assistant for the course Major Works of Western Art (HUM 202).

This course, as other 200-coded humanities courses, is an introductory course that aims to provide students with basic knowledge and understanding of the arts, but also with tools for independent and critical thinking. All undergraduate students are required to complete at least one 200-coded humanities course as part of their graduation requirements.

Teaching assistants are expected to lead weekly one-hour discussion sections. The discussion sections are intended to enhance students’ critical outlook and their ability to express themselves through presentations and discussions. Each discussion section consists of about 25 students. The language of instruction is English.

Qualifications 

Candidates with an MA or PhD degree in Art History and related fields as well as advanced graduate students who are pursuing an MA or PhD degree in Art History and related fields are eligible for the position.

Qualified candidates’ cumulative grade point averages and the courses they have taken will be taken into consideration. 

An excellent command of English is required. Qualified candidates’ language scores will be taken into consideration and candidates with the highest scores will be prioritized. 

Qualified candidates’ teaching experience will also be taken into consideration. For candidates who have worked as a teaching assistant in an art history or related fields course before, previous performance evaluations by the course instructors and student evaluation results will be taken into consideration. 

The compatibility of the candidates with the respective needs of the course will be assessed. In particular, the candidate’s past experience in teaching humanities courses (if any), their ability to coordinate and manage students, their teamwork skills and their potential to contribute to the course will also be evaluated.

Responsibilities 

The candidate is expected to:

  • attend weekly HUM 202 lectures and follow the course content
  • lead discussion sessions every week
  •  grade examinations, writing assignments, and discussion section activities
  •  keep track of student attendance and participation
  •  help with exam proctoring during all exams
  •  hold weekly office hours
  •  attend all training, orientation programs, and meetings designed for HUM teaching assistants
  • be an active participant of the Humanities team
