Abstract: Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) is one of the fastest growing use cases in 5G deployments. Global projections indicate that FWA subscriber base will exponentially increase, anticipated to reach approximately 265 million subscribers by 2029. While traditional mobile-centric cellular network infrastructures can theoretically accommodate FWA users, the distinctive characteristics of fixed wireless connectivity—characterized by high data consumption and minimal tolerance for service interruptions— creates unique challenges to be addressed. Conversely, the inherent fixed nature of FWA technology offers strategic opportunities for network optimization and potential infrastructure cost reductions within cellular network ecosystems.
In this talk I will briefly discuss the growth and projections of FWA, its unique challenges and innovative solutions to improve this use case in 5G and Next-G cellular networks. I will share an overview and some insights about a new exciting technology called Joint Phase and Time Arrays. Compared to analog beamformer systems, JPTA -with a marginal cost increase- can unlock beamforming towards different spatial directions over different bands.
Bio: Dr. Mustafa Ozkoc received B.Sc. degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Physics from Bogazici University in 2018. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from New York University (NYU) in 2022, specializing in wireless communications and machine learning applications for wireless systems. Currently, Dr. Ozkoc serves as a Senior Research Engineer at Samsung Research America, where he contributes to the advancement of Samsung's 5G product portfolio and research initiatives for emerging 6G network technologies. His research focuses on developing and implementing advanced physical (PHY) layer algorithms, with particular emphasis on millimeter-wave beam management, beam codebook design, and the application of machine learning techniques in wireless communication and telecommunications networks.
