Dean's Speaker Seminar: Dr.Özlem Salehi Köken''An Introduction...

Dear Students and Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Özlem Salehi Köken of Algorithmiq, a Finland-based quantum startup, will be giving a talk as part of our Dean's Speaker Series. The Dean's Speaker Series is dedicated to hosting talks and events by globally recognized researchers.

The event is scheduled for February 28, 2025 Friday at 13:30 in FENS G035.

Please find the title/abstract of the talk and a short bio of the speaker below.

Title: An Introduction to Quantum Optimization

Abstract: Quantum computing is an emerging field with the potential advantages in many fields. In this talk, I will provide an introduction to quantum optimization algorithms, focusing on Quantum Annealing, Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA), and Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE). We will explore the real-world applications of these algorithms, highlighting their advantages, limitations, and the current state of research. The discussion will also cover the challenges of implementing these algorithms on near-term quantum hardware and their potential to address complex optimization problems.

Bio: Özlem Salehi Köken completed her Ph.D. in the field of theoretical computer science at Boğaziçi University, Department of Computer Engineering, in 2019. She worked at Özyeğin University Computer Engineering Department after graduation. Between 2021 and 2023, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Polish Academy of Sciences Institute of Theoretical and Applied Informatics, focusing on quantum optimization. She is currently working at Algorithmiq, a Finland-based quantum startup. Additionally, she is one of the founders of QTurkey, a community aimed at raising awareness of quantum technologies in Turkey.
